My Fleep:

Fluoride Holds Risk on Dental Health.

Many in the medical profession highly recommend the use of
fluoride in our drinking water, in our toothpaste, in
tablet and liquid forms, dtc., and yet the "rumor"
continues that it is a form of poison. My grandson has been
given it in liquid and pill form since infancy and now the
doctor has prescribed it for the new baby in the family. We
would very much like to know your opinion on the
advisability of this.

I am concerned about giving fluoride drops to my baby (15
months), even though I am told by pediatricians that it is
important to do so. Can 3 drops of fluoride a day store up
in the baby's system? Would appreciate your views on this
matter - have both friends and family with babies who are
also concerned.

I do not believe in giving fluoride to babies or adults.
The public is quite aware that this is contrary to the
advice of the American Dental and the Medical Associations.
They feel that the reduction in tooth decay that results
justifies the risks, and that these are minimal or non
existent. Most medical and dental nutritionists, however,
do not agree that the risks justify the means.

All my professional life, the practice of preventive
dentistry to reduce the ravages of dental disease has been
my philosophy. At the very beginning of the fluoridation
program I was an enthusiastic booster. Evanston, III.,
where my practice started, was one of the first test cities
in America. However, I soon became disenchanted and at
times have actively gone on record and opposed organized
dentistry's general support of this plan of mass medication.

The first clue that something was wrong with fluoridation
was when the American Dental Association threw all caution
the wind by coming out strongly for its promotion after the
completion of only five years of a proposed 10 year
scientific study. Coupled with that has been the diabolical
effort of the A.D.A. to castigate and smear any doctor or
persons who opposed them.

This they continue to do with shameful vengeance and zeal.
It is inconceivable for a profession not to listen and zeal
and publish all sides of a scientific problem. Closing the
opposition's doors makes one blind forever to truth and
righteousness and to real progress.

Opposing this issue was difficult enough without having to
buck such slandering tactics. In the eyes of the public, if
one didn't support fluoridation, the doctor appeared to
favor people having cavities in order to increase personal
income. What then are the objections that motivate
prevention-minded dentists and physicians to face both
public rath and professional indignation?

Why I oppose Fluoridation. The first is that chronic
fluoride toxicity causes dental fluorosis. This is a white
chalky spot that occurs to the structure of the tooth
during its development. These areas turn dirty gray and
brownish as one gets older.

Proponents for putting fluorine into water supplies,
including the A.D.A., admit such defects occur in 10 to 15%
of the children who are given fluoride. This chalky
spotting of teeth is actually a defect in the normal
structure of the tooth substance. It is much like a fire in
a forest. If the tree is not killed by the fire, one can
later see the damage it afflicted on the rings of the tree.
I find it hard to believe if fluoride does this to a hard
tooth structure that some other problems are not likely
occurring in our other tissues. Research in this regard has
been pitifully inadequate.

Proponents also try to justify their case by mentioning
cities that have natural occurring, larger amounts, of
fluoride in their water but subdue, in their report, of the
problems caused by such excess. The more fluorine present
in the water, the more tooth disfigurement. Death rates,
cancer rates and the increase of a number of other diseases
have been charged to the use of fluorine. These facts
should have been investigated in the beginning and
certainly before the A.D.A., decided to promote this
wholesale push to mass medication.
